Supporting Gifted Learners: A Conversation with Deniz Baloglu, Parent Guide and Consultant

We’re excited to share an insightful conversation with Deniz Baloglu, a parent guide and consultant who works with families of gifted children. Deniz has recently worked with Pacific Preparatory to provide math enrichment for her own gifted 5th grader. In this interview, she shares her unique perspective on supporting gifted students and how PacPrep fits into her approach.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become a parent guide and consultant for families of gifted children?
My journey into this work began, as it does for many, deeply rooted in my own family’s experiences. Navigating the educational ecosystem here in the Bay Area, particularly when seeking academic rigor and intellectual vitality, requires an immense amount of advocacy. We worked to build a stimulating environment for our son, juggling bilingual household dynamics, evaluating curriculum depth, and planning long-term academic trajectories. I realized how overwhelming the process can be.
Through this, I also learned firsthand that a gifted child's unique needs extend far beyond just academics. They often experience asynchronous development, where their rapid cognitive growth might outpace their emotional regulation or social maturity. They frequently have profound sensitivities, a heightened sense of justice, and a deep need for true peers who understand their complex inner worlds.
I found myself naturally drawn to helping other families navigate these same waters, from finding the right school fit to incorporating experiential learning models that honor these social and emotional realities. It transitioned into a formal role as I began collaborating with other educational professionals to help families design holistic, deeply enriching plans that support the whole child, not just their intellect.
What are some of the most common challenges families of gifted children face when it comes to education?
One of the most persistent challenges is finding a program that offers genuine depth rather than just a faster pace. There is a widespread misconception that being "good" or "gifted" at a subject simply means being fast. While some kids do process information quickly, true intellectual engagement often requires the exact opposite: the time and space to go incredibly deep into a topic.
Gifted learners don't just need more work or to race through a standard syllabus; they need different work. They thrive on complexity and making connections across disciplines. Many families struggle to find traditional classroom settings that can accommodate the asynchronous development I mentioned earlier. A student might be working years ahead in math, for instance, but still need the social and emotional support typical of their chronological age. Additionally, finding teachers who truly understand how to mentor a gifted mind can be a significant hurdle.

You’ve worked with Pacific Preparatory to enrich your own child’s math education. What has been the most beneficial aspect of this experience?
The most remarkable benefit has been the relationship built with his instructor. I place a very high value on finding the right mentors. Pacific Preparatory allowed us to find an educator who didn't just teach the material but genuinely engaged with my son's curiosity, and just as importantly, knew how to actually have fun with a gifted ten-year-old who has different interests than his peers. It provided the exact level of challenge we were looking for, allowing him to dive deeply into mathematical concepts without the constraints of a traditional bell schedule or standardized pacing.

How do you see personalized learning environments, like PacPrep's, benefiting gifted learners?
Personalized environments are incredibly liberating for these students. They remove the ceiling. A program like PacPrep’s allows the curriculum to adapt to the child, rather than forcing the child to adapt to the curriculum. If a student wants to spend three weeks going down a rabbit hole on a specific, complex mathematical theory, a personalized setting allows for that intellectual detour. It also frees up time and energy for other developmental hobbies and passions outside of school, whether that is participating in specialized RPG camps, exploring historical topics, or spending time outdoors.
You have a unique approach to supporting families of gifted children. Can you share how you work with parents to create personalized learning plans for their kids, and how this aligns with your experience working with Pacific Preparatory?
I view a child's educational journey as an ecosystem. When I work with parents, we don't just look at the school day; we look at long-term educational goals, extra-curricular enrichment, and the child's specific intellectual passions. I often collaborate closely with specialized educational consultants to ensure no stone is left unturned. We build a customized roadmap, and a massive part of executing that plan is standing up for what the student needs.
This aligns perfectly with PacPrep’s model because they operate with that same level of bespoke care, while also giving families official documentation to show their child's true level and what they are currently working on. This is crucial because gifted kids aren't always strong test-takers in standard environments due to their unique processing styles. Having official records from an established institute like PacPrep is incredibly important when you are proving what your child is actually capable of. They are a vital puzzle piece for families who need to supplement a traditional school or create a fully customized academic plan that honors the student's profile.
What advice would you give to parents of gifted children looking to provide the best educational support for their kids?
Never underestimate the power of speaking up and the importance of finding your team. Pinpointing the right educator is a battle entirely its own. Because gifted kids are so unique, a teacher who works perfectly with my child could be a terrible match for yours. Having access to a broad, high-quality teacher pool is crucial so you aren't losing valuable time or risking your child losing interest in their favorite topics.
Don't be afraid to ask detailed questions about how deep a program goes and their approach to hands-on learning. Seek out mentors who will encourage your child's passions and match their specific learning style. And most importantly, remember that you are the expert on your child. If an environment isn't providing the mental stimulation your child needs, explore alternatives—whether that's transitioning to a different school program, finding specialized summer enrichment, or bringing in a resource like Pacific Preparatory to bridge the gap and find that perfect instructor fit.
What do you hope others take away from your experience with Pacific Preparatory?
I hope families realize that educational enrichment does not have to feel like a chore or a standard tutoring session. When you match a gifted learner with the right personalized environment and a dedicated mentor, learning becomes a deeply fulfilling and joyful experience. It is entirely possible to craft an education that meets your child exactly where they are and challenges them to soar.
