Dr. Karyn A. Koven, Founder and CEO of LanguageBird®, brings more than two decades of expertise in curriculum development, college counseling, teaching, and building partnerships with universities worldwide. As a former high school administrator, counselor, and teacher, Dr. Koven has guided thousands of students to successful admissions at top universities, having visited over 100 colleges both domestically and internationally.
Recognizing a lack of effective online world language options, Dr. Koven founded LanguageBird to provide live, personalized, one-on-one language instruction. She believes that real-time conversation and interaction with expert instructors are critical for true language mastery—far beyond passive learning methods of listening and repeating. LanguageBird was born from the concept of providing high-quality, standards-based, college-preparatory world language courses that students can access from anywhere, combining both quality and convenience.
Dr. Koven earned her undergraduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA.

Kara Scanlon, MEd, BCET, specializes in supporting students in math, science, executive functioning challenges in her virtual private practice. As an individual with dyslexia and ADHD, Kara has learned first-hand the value of hard work, grit, and self-advocacy. After graduating from college as a Physics and Math major, her love of math and science led her to educational therapy to share her joy of learning with her clients. Kara is the annual conference co-chair of AET and has co-facilitated teacher trainings in Narok County, Maasai Mara, Kenya and California. In her free time, she loves snuggles with her French bulldog and collecting Haworthia.

As a Marin County native, I graduated with honors from UC Davis, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology, and continued on to earn a Master’s degree in School Psychology from St. Mary’s College of California. Having started my career in Sonoma County, I moved with my family to Boston and survived 7 long New England winters before happily returning to the Golden State. He graduated from Colby with a B.A. in Human Development. Aaron has his M.A. in Educational Leadership from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. After jobs in sales, marketing, and recruiting, Aaron found his home in education, working in the Admission Offices at Kent School and Milton Academy. Aaron moved to the Bay Area to lead the Admission and Financial Aid Office at Crystal Springs Uplands School, a 6-12 day school in Belmont and Hillsborough, California. While at Crystal, Aaron served on the Bay Area Admission Directors Steering Committee for more than ten years. Aaron has 21 years of admission experience at independent schools, including rural and suburban, day and boarding, and large and small schools. Sean G. Dr. Marina Vaserman is a Doctor of Social Work with a focus on social innovation to close the equity gap of access in schools and services. Upon graduation, Jessica was awarded the SMART Scholarship (Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation) to attend the University of Denver for an MA in Forensic Psychology. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Philosophy from Emory University and a Master's in Social Work from The University of Texas at Austin, Cory brings a unique perspective to her work. Her experience working in child protection and as a supervisor for a mentoring program for at-risk youth has given her a deep understanding of the challenges that families face. Prior to joining the Tutor Corps team, Cory founded a successful sleep consulting business to help families navigate the challenges of sleep and parenting issues with their children. In her current role, she enjoys collaborating with community partners to expand our student base and help more families access the benefits of 1:1 education. Cory lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband, three school-age children, and a pandemic rescue dog named Dwight.

Jesse founded Tutor Corps and Pacific Preparatory School in 2002 and has led both organizations for the past 22 years. He is also the Executive Director of the Tutor Corps Foundation, a non-profit that provides tutoring to under-resourced students. Jesse serves on the Inclusive Schools Group Board of Trustees, the Cognia Advisory Council of California and the Marin Academy Alumni Board. He served on the Marin Waldorf School Board of Trustees from 2001-2007. Jesse graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University and holds a multiple subject teaching credential.

Melissa is a graduate of Western Michigan University with a B.A. in Secondary English Education and minor in political science. She knocked countless doors for Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change, taught middle school at St. HOPE Public Schools as part of Teach For America’s inaugural Sacramento ‘12 corps and at KIPP Bayview in San Francisco, and coached aspiring teachers as an instructional coach with Breakthrough Collaborative. Sydney Montgomery is the 29 year old CEO and Founder of edtech software startup, Outline It, and Executive Director and Founder of Barrier Breakers®, Inc, a faith-based educational non profit dedicated to increasing access to and success in higher education for BIPOC and other marginalized students. Independent Education Consultant
As the child of a special education teacher and a high school English teacher, Teebie grew up immersed in conversation about the impact of education. She graduated from Groton School, Princeton University, and Duke's Fuqua School of Business where she found herself drawn to marketing and communication. After business school, she returned to Groton School to work in the school's development and admission offices as well as a dorm affiliate and a basketball and cross-country running coach. She moved to California in 2006 and worked in the admission office and as the JV tennis coach at Castilleja School before spending almost a decade as the Secondary School Counselor at The Hamlin School. At Hamlin, she enjoyed working with families and students as well as serving on a committee for programmatic excellence and on the board of the Bay Area Secondary School Counselors. Teebie is now an independent admission counselor for families and students who are going through the process of applying to Bay Area high schools and to college preparatory boarding schools in the US and Canada.

Wendy Johnson is an educator, attorney, and disability rights advocate. Wendy has worked for public school districts across Iowa, in addition to homeschooling her own children. Today, Wendy operates a one-of-a-kind business that helps families address skill deficits, navigate homeschooling requirements in Iowa, and enforce IDEA and ADA rights through adminstrative hearings and civil litigation. When Wendy is not working directly with parents and students, she teaches continuing education classes on IDEA compliance and serves as an advocacy ambassador for Autism Speaks.
